Water density directly affects a vessel’s draft and cargo intake, particularly when the vessel is loaded close to its permitted draft.
🔹 Higher-density seawater provides greater buoyancy, allowing the vessel to carry more weight at a given draft.
🔹 Lower-density fresh water provides less buoyancy, so the vessel sinks deeper at the same displacement.
🔹 This difference is reflected through the Fresh Water Allowance (FWA) and must be considered when calculating maximum cargo intake.
For charterers and operators, checking the actual water density at the loading port is therefore important when determining how much cargo a vessel can safely load.
